Tips on Throwing a Party in a Small Home

Just because you have a small home, this doesn't make it unsuitable for hosting a party; there are lots of things you can do to maximise your space to create a perfect area for parties. We take a look at some tips that will help you transform your home into a great party venue.

Remove the excess furniture

You’ll need to make more space in the biggest room of your house for guests to sit, stand and socialise. To do this, remove any furniture that won’t be used during the party. Perhaps you have a pet bed or exercise equipment in your living room; take this out of the space and place it in a room that won’t be used for the party, such as a bedroom. A large TV and TV stand might also take up a lot of space; if you’re not going to be using the TV, relocate these things to a safe spot in another room.

Use several rooms for the party

If you’re having an informal get-together, people will often congregate in different areas of the house. You can facilitate this by placing seating, drinks, and snacks in other areas of your house. For example, the kitchen and the living room are classic spaces that will get used for parties. By encouraging people to use both of these spaces, you can double the amount of room you have in your home for hosting.

Consider your garden

The summer is the perfect time to host a party in a small home if you also have garden space. Gardens are typically more open and can fit more people than a small living space. By extending the party to your garden or using this as the primary space, you can also protect your belongings, and you won’t have to worry about drink spillages or food getting on your furniture.

Relaxed seating

Fitting lots of chairs into your garden or home can be challenging when you have a small space. One potential solution to this is to use more relaxed seating arrangements, such as large cushions placed on the floor or benches that can fit several people next to each other. Before you go out and buy new furniture for people to use as seating, look at the options you already have or ask your closest guests to bring along some extra cushions or seats.

Dinner party seating

If you’re throwing a dinner party, you’ll need a table large enough for everyone to sit at; extra large oak dining tables are a great option if you have the space to store them when they’re not in use. Most small homes won’t have this space; in this case, you can use an extending table or several tables of the same height pushed together. Place a large tablecloth over the top to hide where the tables meet. If there simply isn’t enough seating for everyone, take your dinner party outside and host a more informal barbeque with a fire that people can gather around to keep warm.

Open the windows and doors

Things get stuffy and claustrophobic when you have lots of people in a small space. An open window or door can let in airflow, which can stop everyone from overheating and provide the illusion of more space. This is weather dependent, as you might find that having the door or window open in the cold winter months is just too cold for you and your guests.

Create an area for coats and bags

If your space is limited in the main party area, you don’t want people's coats and bags taking up seating for your guests. Provide guests with a specific area or room where they can store their coats and bags. This will stop them from getting in the way and make the party feel less cluttered. You don’t need a cloakroom; a spare bedroom or utility area will work just as well for storing and keeping coats safe.

Any space can become a great place to have a party; just follow these tips to maximise the area you have, and if in doubt, keep the guest list to a select few people.
