How to Befriend a Crow

Crows are fascinating creatures that have sometimes been associated with death. However, they’re also incredibly intelligent and interesting animals. Crows can recognise people by their faces, so they’re the ideal wild bird for befriending. If you want to befriend a crow in your local area, these tips can help.

Put out food regularly

One of the most effective ways to start a friendship with a crow is to put out food for them to eat. Try to choose food that’s going to be nutritious and healthy for the bird, they may like junk food, but it won’t help their health. Finding out the food that attracts crows might take some trial and error. Seeds and nuts are good choices for crows as well as fruit and vegetables. Avoid feeding a crow any spoiled food or meat, as this may make them unwell. It might take a crow a while to find your food source and trust it enough to eat from there, but once you’ve attracted their attention, you can keep them coming back.

Keep food timings consistent

Once a crow finds your food source, it will return at the same time of day. They will continue to visit as long as the food is provided and the area is kept safe from predators. Therefore, if you want to befriend them, you should keep putting out food at the same time each day. When you’re inconsistent with feeding, crows are less likely to visit the same location repeatedly.

Make sure the area is safe

Crows won’t feed or feel safe if there are predators nearby; any pets can be a cause for concern for a crow. Therefore when you’re feeding them, you need to ensure that all pets are kept out of the way, and the area is safe for them to feed. A quiet area will also be more attractive to crows and all birds. Noisy traffic may scare them off, or they might not visit at all if they feel threatened.

Don’t get too close

You might want to get up close and personal with your new friend as soon as possible, but this isn't a good idea. You should keep your distance to start with until the crow begins to trust you and recognise you as the person feeding them. Crows are very intelligent and can remember and recognise human faces; once they trust you, they may let you get closer to them without flying away.

Listen to their calls

Crows communicate with each other through crow calls; if you can buy a whistle or mimic the sound of a crow using your phone, you might be able to attract them to your garden or feeding area. In addition, you can learn what your crow is trying to communicate by researching and finding out what each type of crow call means. This can help you see when the crow might be distressed and what caused that distress. Removing items that cause distress from your garden will make things more pleasant for the crows you’re trying to befriend.

Throw food near crows

It might take a lot of work to get crows to come into your garden. An alternative tactic you can take is to go looking for them in your local area. If you regularly walk around the green areas where you live, keep some unsalted peanuts with you in your pocket. Throw them towards the crows but not at them, and do this repeatedly on a daily basis. The crows will soon recognise you and the time that you come out on your daily walks. Some people can do this with their dogs if they’re friendly and won’t chase or be a threat to the crows.

Befriending crows can be really exciting and a great way to learn about these fascinating birds. You don’t need much to start with, just some crow-friendly seeds or nuts. If you do plan on befriending crows, be careful, as they will recognise you and expect you to have food on you at all times. Some people might begin to get scared if ten or twenty crows start following them on their daily walks waiting to be fed. Here is another resource you can use for attracting crows.
