Tips For Fail-Safe Gifting

The art of gift-giving can be a tricky subject. We all want to treat our loved ones to items and experiences they will remember for a lifetime. Whether you favour practical items or meaningful mementoes, with careful thought and consideration, you can make your recipient’s next birthday extra special with these handy tips.

Heed Arrangements

Currently, money is tight for most of us. Suppose you and your loved one have an arrangement to save money by foregoing gifts for one another. You might think that withdrawing from this agreement and getting them something, after all, will win you brownie points, when in fact, it’s quite the opposite. You’ll only make your recipient feel terrible that they have nothing for you in return. Similarly, if you have both agreed on a budget, stick to it.

Pay Attention

The best gift you can give is one that reflects your recipient’s personality and hobbies - this shows that you have paid attention and support their endeavours. Consider your recipient’s favourite band, jewellery designer, bath products or their main hobby, be it embroidery, gaming or scrapbooking. Something that aligns with their interests is guaranteed to go down a storm.

Avoid Clothes

As much as you may want to bestow a fancy new dress or suit on your loved one, buying clothing for somebody else can be decidedly impractical. Unless you want to interrogate them about their sizing, it’s best to steer clear of gifts that may not fit. If you’re adamant about getting them something to wear, keep the receipt or stick to accessories like hats and scarves.

Gifts Don’t Have To Be Physical

Remember, not every gift has to be a tangible item. Experience days are wonderful alternatives to traditional gifts. Consider booking you and your recipient in for a spa day, afternoon tea or something a little more exciting such as go-kart racing. Experience-based gifts also avoid the awkwardness and disappointment of unwanted presents.

Give Them What They Want

You may think you know your recipient inside out, but if they’ve requested something specific, don’t try and surprise them with something you think they really want. Often, the most thoughtful gift is something you have asked for - it demonstrates appreciation and attentiveness. Your recipient may have asked for something decidedly dull and pedestrian, like new socks; however, if socks are what they want, then socks they shall get.

Master The Art Of Gift-Wrapping

Receiving a gift is made all the more exciting when it is beautifully presented. You might not be the world’s best wrapper, but a little patience and effort never go amiss. Purchase high-quality biodegradable wrapping paper and check out online tutorials for gift-wrapping tips. If you have an awkwardly-shaped item, pop it in a gift bag or box and add some hessian ribbon for flare.

Problem-Solvers

Many tend to shy away from practical gifts, for fear they might be boring. However, a problem-solver gift can be an incredibly thoughtful option. Suppose you’ve overheard your recipient complaining about blunt kitchen knives. In this case, a set of high-quality chef’s knives is ideal. Self-care products such as fluffy hot water bottle covers and scented bath salts are always failsafe options for hard workers.

Don’t Be Overly Practical

As fantastic as a thoughtful yet practical gift can be, there is such a thing as too practical. Items such as household basics aren’t exactly unique or thoughtful and are best reserved for the weekly shopping list. That said, a basket or luxury hamper full of their favourite tea, biscuits, wine, and other daily comforts can be a real treat.

Don’t Embarrass Them

The worst thing you could possibly do regarding gifting is to give your recipient something that will make them feel awkward or embarrassed. Certain items come with unspoken meanings attached to them, even when you have the best intentions. For example, avoid presents like everyday shower gel, gym memberships and anti-ageing products unless, of course, your recipient has specifically requested them.

Avoid Trinkets

We’ve all been given ornaments and trinkets that we’re not particularly fond of. These items often sit atop a shelf or mantlepiece, gathering dust until a sufficient amount of time has passed so they can be sent to charity or re-gifted. Don’t create more household chores for your recipient and if you must get them an ornament or trinket, be sure it’s something they’ll genuinely appreciate.
